The Tufts Full-Time Lecturers Union Bargaining Committee is pleased to report that on Friday, May 13 we reached agreement on the framework of a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with Tufts’ administration. This event was the culmination of months of work by members of the Bargaining Committee, SEIU 509 representatives, and prior to that, the organizers of the Union election. You all have played a role by giving voice to your needs and concerns as a Lecturer at Tufts on issues that are important to us and to life on campus. Thank you for your time and effort!
Meetings originally scheduled for May 18th/19th have been canceled, and a new meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 31 (time & location TBA). On that day (5/31) we will review the final language of the CBA and begin voting to ratify it in the afternoon. Wednesday June 1st (time & location TBA) will be reserved for voting on campus as well. Please mark your calendar accordingly and we’ll update you by email with details. Online voting will be made available after those dates. The complete agreement will be posted online by 6/1, and will also be available in hard copy at the voting site.
In addition to the good news above, we wanted to describe in brief the major terms of the CBA while we wait for the legal language of the agreement to be drafted (please read on below). This is a three-year agreement that would begin September 1, 2016.
Dear Fellow Full-time Lecturers,
We, the members of the bargaining committee of the Tufts Full-Time Lecturers Union, have been negotiating with the administration since last summer towards our first contract. These negotiations are culminating in a day-long session this Friday, May 13 from 9am-4pm (location TBA). We will be holding our own Lecturers’ meeting this Tuesday, May 10 from 1-2:30pm in Miner 224 to prepare. Below is a quick recap of the process so far and details about the salary and raise issues that are still being discussed.
We encourage you, as someone who will be covered by the new contract, to participate in — or to at least witness — these final deliberations. A strong turnout this Friday will show the administration that we are united in our belief that we deserve a contract that values our role as teachers at Tufts.
From the beginning of the negotiations, we have emphasized that we are part of one faculty in which teaching and research are the twin pillars of Tufts’ mission. All of our positions have flowed from the view that teaching, and our role, needs to be better supported to ensure a productive balance.
Our main objectives have been:
We conducted seven meetings with aggregate attendance of about forty full-time lecturers. There was general consensus across departments and meetings, which is outlined below.
The general narrative is to disrupt the existing hierarchy or caste system that exists between teaching and research faculty and replace it with a more equitable system in which both are valued.
With few exceptions, the boilerplate proposal will be the same as articles recently agreed upon in the Part-Time Lecturer Contract.
These provisions are: (i) mostly standard and non-controversial; (ii) where not, were vigorously discussed and bargained for in the negotiations by the part-time lecturers; (iii) are unlikely to win agreement to change from the administration if the union tried to change them; and (iv) are of equal relevance and applicability to both part-time and full-time Lecturers.
